How to Use More Brain Power

by | Blog

In my last blog, The Mindfulness Files: Authentic Confidence, I talked about authentic confidence coming from being able to first calm and then access more of your brain’s capabilities. There are various methods to assist with that process and many start with breathing. The following practice is known as alternative nostril breathing (pranayama) and it originates from the practice of yoga. It helps to wake up both hemispheres of the brain, left and right sides, while calming the nervous system. Read through the directions below so you understand the flow of an entire round before trying out the practice. (Please note: If you have high blood pressure, do not hold your breath.)

• Sit comfortably in a way that you feel fully supported.
• Begin by placing the right thumb on the right nostril, gently pressing down to close it off.
• Inhale slowly and fully through left nostril.
• Pause for a second and gently press down on the left nostril with ring finger to close it off and then release the thumb from the right      nostril.
• Exhale steadily and softly through your right nostril.
• Inhale slowly and fully through right nostril, Pause for a second and use thumb to again gently close off the right nostril.
• Breathe out steadily and softly through the left nostril.

To start another round, just repeat. Allow the process to be at a slow pace, letting go of having to rush or force your way through it. After 2-3 rounds check in to see if you notice a change towards feeling calm yet energized.
