Considering a Major Career Change? 3 Signs You’re Ready

by | Blog

If we were to look at work as a large aspect of what gives our lives meaning, we could see why the average American considers a change 6-7 times over the decades of working for a living.  What is important and what drives us changes throughout our lifespan.   Feeling that you want to shift your career may come from looking around and seeing that you are dead-ended in your current position.  Or it might stem from the need to be doing something that feeds your soul or at least your psyche. But how do you know you are really ready to jump?

 1)     You are doing your homework. If you were asked how long you’ve been looking into this new career, you would realize you have put some serious time and maybe even miles into doing the research.  It’s gone past just being a momentary blip on your radar; the idea of this new career is something you are figuring out how to make feasible.  Maybe you’ve run numbers on how to pay for the training to get you there.  Or you’ve got the commute time down to get to that amazing company you’ve been following on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook.

 2)     You’re talking out loud.  You have begun discussing how you see the transition happening with those whom your career change will impact the most.  You may have even already solicited other kinds of outward support from redefining your money goals with your financial advisor to working on your self-confidence with your personal coach to planning your course of training with a career counselor.

 3)     You’ve slipped at your current job Your boss makes mention of working on a project that will take you into the next fiscal year and you visibly squirm.  You joke with a colleague about working for the competition, or even becoming the competition.  On some level, a part of you has made the decision and moving on has become your new truth.   It’s now in your hands to plot your journey and make it real.
